Some spanish girl name and their meaning
spanish female and last name

A spanish name is different from an English speaking country´s name in a few ways. When speaking of a spanish name, you want to keep in mind the concept of a typical catholic country and not the mixture of ethnic groups nowadays.

If you remember this, then the rest will make sense. Children in Spanish countries were always baptised in the church and were therefore under the strict rules of the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church had as a rule that the child had to have a saint´s name, but in first place, the girls had to always have Maria or Mary written first. So right from the beginning the girls always had two names, Maria Angeles or Maria Teresa, for example. Then, all Spanish have two last names. First is the father´s surname and then the mothers´s. Curious, isn´t it. In English speaking countries when a couple gets married, the mother takes on the husband´s surname as a symbol of union, but in the Spanish speaking countries, a family name is very important for a person and their identification and family pride. They feel that they were christened with this name and that it is part of them and should never have to be given up. It is so important that they pass both spanish last name onto their children. So we now have as an example- Maria Teresa Martinez Herrero. Something quite different from John Smith which is much shorter and less explicative than a spanish name.

Where did you get your name from?

Many names from different countries are similar because they come from the same origin but because of the language, are pronounced and spelt differently. If we look up our spanish name, it has probably come from the Old or New Testament and would therefore come from Germanic, Greek, Hebrew or Latin roots.

One of the first things a couple does when they know that they are going to have a child is to start thinking about the name. In spanish countries, the spanish girl name as I mentioned before is going to start with Maria and then what? She could be named after one of the grandmothers, or another relative that might have done something important and so the parents feel that if they name their daughter after this remarkable person, their daughter will also be great too. The majority of the spanish girl name are thanks to the saints in remembrance of someone who has passed away. Sometimes a couple simply likes a name because of how it sounds but discards this name because it reminds them of someone with this name and that particular person was or is not very dear to them. We are always playing the game of association. We cannot avoid doing it. Some female names are changed at the last minute because the daughter was born on an outstanding festive day like St. Mercedes in Barcelona, St. Amparo in Valencia, St Macarena in Seville or St. Pilar In Zaragoza.

Some spanish girl name and their meaning

Some spanish female name have literal spanish translation like the name of Blanca which means white, Luz which means Light, Nieves which means snow, Estrella which means star, Esperanza- hope, Dulce-sweet, Linda-pretty or Paloma-dove. But there are others that have a meaning which we can suppose has come from what it describes, such as Guadalupe which means river of black stone yet others no one knows why they mean what do, like Elena-the bright one or Belinda-the beautiful snake.

Spanish last name are also translated from where the person came from or in many cases what their job was, like Herrero-blacksmith or Tortola-dove breeder. Spanish name is a good system of family nomenclator.
