What can be found open on Sundays in Spain?

Mary V., one of our newsletter readers was wondering about what is open on Sunday in Spain. Spain has changed quite a lot over the last decade, especially in areas catering to tourist on the Costa Blanca. In many other countries there are shopping malls that are open 7 days a week and the task of shopping can be done at any time. But here in Spain, if I have to say so myself, Sunday is a day of relax and only a small selection of convenient shops stay open.

From my experience of trying to find last minute food plans, I have found that there are all kinds of restaurants for eating to tie you over until Monday.
  • The cafeterias serve great pastries for breakfast and then you have restaurants or small Spanish "bars", which serve food ( not just alcohol ) family style. To get into the swing of things try the typical Paella.
  • There are also quite a few places that make roasted chicken and starters to "take away" - in Spanish ´para llevar´. At these places they usually have basics such as milk, bread and eggs.
  • And as a last alternative, the petrol stations with their rather complete convenience stores.
