One of the biggest festivities in the region of Valencia are the Fallas. (in valencian falles ). Celebrated every year around St. Josephs day , the 19th of March, preparation for it has become an entire years work (and business :-)  ).

Huge sculptures and figures ( called ninots ) are put up in the streets. Each neighborhood, called the group of fallers, builds his own impressive monument. Often those sculptures make fun of local politicians or personalities.

The entire week of celebrations and parades ends with a huge bonfires at midnight of St.Josephs day, where all those impressive pieces of art disappear in huge fires.



The biggest fallas are to be seen in the city of Valencia , but lots of city in the entire region have their own fallas. It's estimated that more than 300 different fallas sculptures have been put up (and burned) during this years fallas in the region of Valencia.

We where lucky and went to the city of Gandia just a few days before the bonfire night.
